Modelling the Earth

Modelling the Earth – AIMES contribution to the global climate modelling community

Many of the latest climate models to be used in the next Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report will include not just representations of the physical components of the climate system, but also couplings to the biological components of the land and ocean carbon cycle. Serious international modeling of the carbon cycle was initiated by GAIM through projects like OCMIP, TRANSCOM, VEMAP, CCMLP and CMIP.  AIMES has been instrumental in this advance (Friedlingstein et al., 2006), and in encouraging dialogue between climate modelers and socioeconomic researchers to ensure greater consistency in the IPCC assessment process (Hibbard et al., 2007).
